Te Kāika, a Ōtākou-based organisation that provides healthcare and social services to Māori, Pasifika, low-income, and refugee communities throughout the Otago region, has signed a three-year deal that will see its name and logo appear on the Highlanders' shorts in exchange for the Highlanders promoting hauora initiatives in the community.
As momentum grows in the campaign to end alcohol sponsorship in sports, notably with a private member's Bill introduced in Parliament by Green MP Chloe Swarbrick, the Highlanders-Te Kāika alliance can be considered as being ahead of the curve.
"Te Kāika has always been known to do things differently and the Highlanders were looking for a way to help that organisation," Singhsays.
