Holistic care for mokopuna, supporting emotional and cultural wellbeing

Whānau Care

Whānau Care is a partnership between Kāi Tahu and Oranga Tamariki, proudly Level 1 Accredited under Section 396 with the mandate to work alongside whānau to reconnect Kai Tahu mokopuna with their whakapapa and identity. Guided by tikaka and supported by trusted kaitiaki, we provide safe, nurturing care for mokopuna, insuring they grow strong in their culture and connection to their iwi.

Our Approach

At Whānau Care, we believe mokopuna thrive when they remain connected to their whānau, hapū, and iwi. Our whānau-centred approach upholds the mana of every mokopuna and whānau we support, placing their moemoeā (dreams) and wawata (aspirations) at the heart of our work. Guided by Kāi Tahu values, we focus on strengthening whakapapa connections, caring for one another, protecting our whenua and culture, and acting with integrity. We support kaitiaki whānau to care for mokopuna, help whānau reconnect and heal, and ensure every mokopuna’s needs are met so they can grow safely, securely, and with a strong sense of identity.

We are recruiting Kaitiaki to provide care for Kāi Tahu tamariki in Te Wai Pounamu. There are a number of care options from emergency, respite, temporary and permanent.
