Te Kāika – Holistic Healthcare and Wellbeing for Whānau

The vision of Te Kāika is rooted in the belief that a healthy whānau is a thriving whānau. We aim to create an environment where mokopuna and their whānau are empowered to achieve their aspirations, grounded in Ngāi Tahu values. This vision emphasises the importance of connection, cultural identity, and community support as essential elements for promoting overall wellbeing.

As a kaupapa Māori organisation, our work integrates healthcare and social services, ensuring that whānau have access to the resources, guidance, and support they need to thrive.

Our Mission: He
Korowai Manaaki

Guided by the mission He Korowai Manaaki, Te Kāika provides a cloak of care and support that addresses not only individual health needs but also the comprehensive wellbeing of whānau.

It’s our mission to provide wraparound health and social services support for whānau across Otago.

We provide our patients and clients with access to essential services in a safe community environment that encourages independence and rangatiratanga.

Our Values – The Foundation of Te Kāika

Our approach is guided by six core Ngāi Tahu values, ensuring that whānau feel valued, supported, and connected in their journey to wellbeing.

Whanaungatanga | Building Strong Relationships

We foster deep connections by strengthening whānau bonds and building meaningful community partnerships.

By creating opportunities for shared experiences and collective support, we help whānau develop lasting relationships that enhance wellbeing.

Manaakitanga | Compassionate and Culturally Aligned Care

At Te Kāika, we are committed to delivering care that respects identity, culture, and diversity.

Our approach ensures:

  • Meaningful and respectful interactions
  • Inclusive and welcoming environments
  • Holistic, empathetic healthcare and support

Tikanga | Honouring Māori Cultural Identity and Traditions

We embed tikanga Māori into every aspect of our service delivery, ensuring that whānau feel empowered in their identity and connected to their heritage.

By upholding and respecting Māori customs, language, and traditions, we provide a culturally safe and inclusive space for all.

Tohutanga | Excellence in Healthcare and Knowledge

We combine clinical expertise with cultural knowledge, ensuring that modern healthcare practices align with traditional Māori values.

Through continuous learning and best practice, we provide high-quality, evidence-based care for whānau.

Kaitiakitanga | Guardianship and Responsibility

As kaitiaki, we protect and uphold:

  • People – Ensuring whānau are supported to achieve their aspirations
  • Culture – Preserving Ngāi Tahu traditions and knowledge for future generations
  • Resources – Managing community assets wisely for long-term wellbeing
  • Environment – Making sustainable decisions that care for whenua and whānau

Rangatiratanga | Leadership and Whānau Empowerment

We believe in supporting whānau to take charge of their own health and wellbeing.

Through education, skills development, and self-determination, we equip individuals and families with the confidence and knowledge to make informed healthcare choices.

By deepening our partnerships and ensuring culturally responsive care, we continue to make a meaningful impact in Ōtākou.

As a key supporter of Māori, Pasifika, and whānau across the region, we provide integrated health and social services designed to help every mokopuna and whānau thrive.

Together, we will uphold the mana of our community, creating a future where wellbeing, equity, and opportunity flourish for generations to come.
