Tōku Oranga

Tōku Oranga, also known as Access and Choice, provides free mental health and wellbeing support to individuals and whānau in Dunedin and Ōamaru.

Our team of Health Improvement Practitioners, Health Coaches, and Community Support Workers are based within general practices, making it easier and faster for you to access the help you need.

Whether you're managing stress, anxiety, sleep issues, long-term health conditions, or addiction recovery, we’re here to support you with tailored, practical solutions.

How We Support You

Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs)

Our Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs) provide free, 20–30 minute consultations, often available on the same day. They work alongside general practitioners and nurses to offer behavioural health support, helping you manage:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sleep issues
  • Grief and loss
  • Low mood and depression
  • Relationship challenges
  • Weight management
  • Alcohol, drug, and smoking concerns
  • Chronic pain and fatigue
  • High blood pressure and other long-term conditions

HIPs offer both individual and group sessions, including Breathing for Wellness workshops and Gardening for Mental Health programs. You can book an appointment through reception or ask your doctor or nurse for a referral.

Health Coaches

Our Health Coaches help you take control of your health and wellbeing by working with you to set achievable goals.

They provide support with:

  • Developing healthy lifestyle habits
  • Managing long-term health conditions
  • Reducing stress and improving self-care
  • Finding enjoyable ways to be more active

Health Coaches accept same-day referrals from GP staff, ensuring you can access support when you need it.

Community Support Workers

Our Community Support Workers focus on the social and practical aspects of wellbeing. They provide guidance and connect individuals and whānau with community 
resources, including:

  • Supporting independence and daily life
  • Helping whānau access essential services
  • Connecting you to local community support networks
  • Assisting with housing, employment, and financial challenges

Addiction Recovery Support

We offer comprehensive addiction support, including:

  • Alcohol and drug dependency assistance
  • Gambling addiction support
  • Relapse prevention strategies
  • Recovery planning and long-term guidance

Mental Health and Wellbeing Tools

We equip individuals with proven strategies to improve mental health, including:

  • Techniques for managing stress and anxiety
  • Practical tools for emotional regulation
  • Mindfulness and resilience-building skills

Who Can Access Tōku Oranga?

Our services are available to anyone registered at Te Kāika Dunedin or Te Kāika Ōamaru. There is no limit to how many times you can access support.
